During the 4 stroke L206 class race on Sunday, Max started outside front row and led after Lap 1. He was dicing with P2 for the entire race with a lot of passing and re-passing between the two drivers. Max’s competitor moved ahead midway through the final lap, but Weiland responded with an audacious outside pass with three corners to go to secure the lead. From there, Max powered his Checkered Motorsports Magik Kart USA home for the win—almost.
A five-second post-race penalty for jumping the start (slightly) subsequently tempered the celebration and left Max scored as P3. But while it was a bummer not to ride out Miami with the win, it doesn’t change the fact that Max turned in an incredible drive during another productive weekend that concluded with a podium finish.
Here is that excellent drive from outside front row by Max with the last-lap pass:
During the 2 stroke Mini Final on Saturday, Max started P13 of 24 and moved up to P8 by the end of Lap 1. But he’d receive contact and jostling from there that derailed his opportunity to advance further. The bumps and rubs sent Max on a trip thru the grass that left him in 15th. Weiland would continue to drive hard once he got back on track, though, and passed all the karts in his pack to finish in the top half of the field in P10.
Congratulations to all of the tremendous kids who raced and competed so unbelievably throughout the weekend. Special thanks to Electronic Merchant Systems, Ferrari of San Francisco, and BRM Chronographes Americas.
